PRACTICE & POSITION
I'm Andrew, an identity and experiential designer from edinburgh, scotland. my practice explores cultural revival in an increasingly hyper-digital age. I love creating immersive worlds and bringing ideas to life through identity, music, space, writing and physical artefacts. I'm interested in how design can make people feel part of something, and how music, atmosphere and aura can create genuine connections between strangers.
Influenced by the rebellious spirit of 1980s New Romantic music subcultures, I explore HOW identity and experiential design can preserve cultural energy in an age of infinite digital replication.
Achieving a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at Kingston School of Art has been the defining challenge of my creative trajectory this far. The course truly shaped me into a critically reflective designer, prioritising open-minded research, prioritise experimentation, and to persistently develop ideas to create something spectacular. This autumn, I'll begin an MFA in Communication at the Royal College of Art, where I'll continue investigating how identity, spatial design and immersive experiences can be used to recover cultural energy and foster genuine human connection.

UNBOUND UTOPIA FESTIVAL IS AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT WHICH I CREATED FROM END TO END. BRINGING TOGETHER ARTISTS, DJS AND AUDIENCES THROUGH A TEMPORARY EVENT AND A FORENSIC ARCHIVE OF VINYL, RECORDINGS AND ARTEFACTS, THIS PROJECT EXPLORES HOW DESIGN CAN PRESERVE THE AURA OF COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE IN AN AGE OF INFINITE DIGITAL REPLICATION.
I developed an identity system and experiential event that challenged mainstream commercialism. POLITICISING THE RETRO-FUTURIST AESTHETIC OF MY IDENTITY DESIGN, I PAIRED IT WITH AN UNCONVENTIONAL EXPERIENTIAL EVENT - BLASTING MUSIC FROM A SPORTS CAR IN AN URBAN FIELD - TO GENERATE REAL WORLD BUZZ AROUND A SHARED PHYSICAL MOMENT. THIS DEMONSTRATED MY CORE BELIEF; THAT A TRULY EFFECTIVE EXPERIENTIAL EVENT, RICH IN AESTHETIC DETAIL AND atmosphere, becomes an unreal powerful tool dedicated to the preservation of the aura in a hyper-digital landscape.
